sarah lefton's self-indulgent ramblings

I guess I'm really blogging now

It must be meaningful in some way that I'm getting some real nasty attacks online, right?

Someone that I know, in fact, I think it's a "friend" of mine, posted this to Jewlicious today, w/r/t to my defense of Mobius's pained comments about the Salute to Israel parade in NYC:

Sarah, you’re ridiculous. The cutesy gamine approach you take to everything might have been cute if you were a decade younger but now it’s just pathetic. Mobius is a tool. His “critiques” lack any and all “nuance” and he really could have benefited from completing more than a semester or two at whatever joke college he didn’t graduate from. I know this is the blog world but even so, I have issues with being lectured to by mental midgets. And as for you, well, what do you know about love for Israel sitting there all cushy in San Francisco, running your “let’s make it up as we go along” minyan and taking your annual “free” junkets to Israel? You should just shut the fuck up. Mobius is an idiot and you’re not that far behind him. You should just stick to writing posts promoting yourself, your friends and your lame activities on Jewschool.

Good times, eh?

Ridiculous. Sheer idiocy. Where do these people come from?

Apparently San Francisco, based on the IP address, someone posted.

Just so you know, I will never post on Jewlicious again. It's over until that site develops a thoughtful comments policy that discourages hate.

Sarah,

I'm really sorry that such hateful venom was said to you. Anyone who doesn't realize what a gem you are is a fool. The work you do with the Mission Minyan is amazing. If anyone told me about what you and your friends have done up in SF a few years ago, I wouldn't have believed it to be possible. It's a pity that we don't have 10 more of you. The Jewish community around here would be much more dull without you.

Thanks Oyster. You too. Seriously. Keep doing what you do, and pretty soon, some hateful fuckheads will stalk you as well. :)

Dear Sarah,
Sorry that you were mistreated over on Jewlicious comment section. It happens. We do not however have a comment policy of censorship - which is what happens at Jewschool.

If Mobius doesn't like a comment - well it doesn't appear.

ck feels that we need to have the widest tolerance possible for comments and let fools make fools of themselves.

Mobius's picture of the chofetz chaim and his responsible blogging logo are mere rhetoric— when I have confronted him about obvious lashon hara in his blog - he did not publish those comments.

So I am not saying you shouldnt write for Jewschool - you darn well should. Just, dont rush to judge all of what we do over here, because of same bad apple.

Peace and keep up your great work out there in San Fran!

Thanks, Rabbi, for your kind words and praises and whatnot. I still have to disagree with you. Censorship is one thing, but allowing viscious hateful speech to stand is another.

I am not going to get into the business of comparing one website to another. The writers of all these sites are friends of mine, and I am a fan of everyone's work - when it doesn't descend into sniping, which is the last thing the Jewish people need.

Frankly, I don't care where this sort of thing happens. When we let hate exist on our projects - which are private enterprise after all, and therefore do not fall under the rubric of free speech protection anyway - we are enabling the descent of the Internet into lower and lower realms.

I've had it with blog negativity, and I've had it with being stalked and harrassed. I really do appreciate your sentiments and apologies - and often agree with your points of view! But I really think you guys should develop a comments policy. I am not holding up Jewschool's as an example. But I *would* hold up any major national publication's as an example. Surely serious publications do not let libelous, slanderous, hateful comments stand in their comments section. I urge your team, and mine, and every blog's team, to look at what the best practices in the publishing industry are, and let those guide us as we improve the forums we set up to create meaningful dialogue amongst what ought to be friends and peers.

Finally, I want to suggest that the person who has attacked me is an insider. This person posted from an San Francisco IP address and made uncomfortably insidery comments about my life. There are very few people in the world who know that I was offered a free trip to Israel this summer. I haven't even booked my flight yet, and thus hadn't advertised the fact to much of anyone.

This is why this whole thing is so disturbing. Either someone close to me has a serious personality disorder, someone is physically stalking me...or perhaps there's another possiblity altogether. I have my theories.

I look forward in the longterm to the truth, but in the short term, I look forward to a safer, more responsible atmosphere world for writers and public discourse. Would we, as a community, stand for this sort of behavior in a public forum - in our JCCs, in our schools, even in a civic public lecture hall? I think not.

Hi... this is ck from Jewlicious. I am a staunch advocate of free speech but even I have my limits. The comment in question didn't get deleted at least in part because I didn't see it till much later. The truth is I cannot monitor every single comment on Jewlicious - sometimes real life intervenes, what can I say? I am sorry that you were hurt by the comment and I am curious as to why you decided to give the author more exposure by reproducing his post on your blog as well. But whatever, I guess this is the price one pays for high visibility - you should see the shit people have written about me. I have a thick skin and I am also capable, nay eager, of physically defending myself. I hope you reconsider your decision to no longer comment on Jewlicious - as you can see there is much love for you here.
